Anak Sastra
Literary Journal
Anak Sastra's 50th issue is now published. Special thanks to [issue 1 contributor] Shaz Johar for guest editing this “golden anniversary” issue. Inside readers will find short fiction about the psychological pitfalls of overachievement through the eyes of a high school student in the Philippines; a modern retelling of a Sumatran myth involving a boy, a tiger, and the forest in Indonesia; an American war veteran and his adult son returning to Vietnam to make peace with their ghosts; a time traveler returning to the early years of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia; three siblings and a ghost seeking a shaman who can help them in Malaysia; an elderly man reminiscing with his grandson about generational changes to the neighborhood along Upper Serangoon Road in Singapore; creative nonfiction about discovering one’s Thai heritage; and an assortment of poems connected to Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Singapore. Have a read and enjoy!

About Us
Started in August 2010, Anak Sastra Literary Journal is a quarterly online publication which hopes to provide a venue for Southeast Asian writers to promote their writings in English. The magazine also encourages expats, tourists and regional connoisseurs alike to submit writings that share their experiences (real or imagined) living or traveling in Southeast Asia. Submissions from or about any Southeast Asian country are welcomed. The direct translation for "Anak Sastra" in Indonesian and Malay languages is "literature kid" (but please don't send us children's literature).
